About Ken

Ken thinks most of what passes for risk management is quietly solving the wrong problem, and he has spent more than twenty years proving the point in practice rather than from the sidelines.

Along the way he has led or managed engineering, operations, audit, legal and risk functions on a global scale, in industries as varied as electrical power distribution, landline telephony, high-speed digital networks, cellular communications, oil and gas and mining, and in public and private companies across several countries.

That range is the point. He is equally at home with a board working through its governance, compliance and risk as with the people doing the actual work, and wary of any approach that looks tidy on paper but falls over in practice.

Ken studied Electronic Engineering Technology and Software Development at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, took business and finance at the University of Calgary, and holds a professional certificate in Strategic Decision and Risk Management from Stanford University. He has presented on plenty of risk topics over the years, from the responsibilities of boards in risk governance to cloud computing, open source software and where risk management goes wrong.

He writes and speaks on risk and decision-making, with selected pieces under Interesting Reads. If you have a decision or a risk worth talking through, get in touch.
